2008 SCHOLARSHIP

Jill Cleland is the 2008 Scholarship Winner

Jill Cleland will be graduating from West Genesee High School with an Advanced Regents Diploma. She has a 3.0 GPA and will be attending Lindenwood University in Missouri where she plans to major in Physical Education.

During her high school career she was a stand out athlete, playing on the volleyball team and the golf team for 4 years. She also played 2 years on the tennis team and 1 year on the basketball team. In 2007 her volleyball team competed in the New York State finals, and in 2007 and 2008 she was elected to the OHSL first team in Volleyball. In addition, she was an OHSL 2nd team selection in golf in 10th grade, a OHSL 1st team selection in golf as a Junior and will most likely will be chosen 1st team as a Senior. She finished 10th in Section III girls golf sectionals.

Jill is well known for her long golf drives and competed in the Remax long drive competition. She lost in the regional semi-finals in Sewell, New Jersey by just 2 yards.

Jill enjoys jet skiing, swimming, reading and spending time with her family and friends.

SWDGA GIRL'S SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS, PARENTS, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, COACHES AND ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

The purpose of this scholarship is to aid young women who are active participants in golf and who are in need of financial assistance. A second $1,000 scholarship in honor of Judy McLean may also be awarded. This scholarship will be awarded in the Freshman year only.

A candidate is expected to have an acceptable scholastic record, active participation in golf and financial need. Other important considerations in the selection process are golf performance, character of the candidate and motivation for a higher education. The closing date for receiving the completed application is MARCH 31, 2008. The winners will be announced in late May or early June.

The application must be received by the committee no later than MARCH 31, 2008:

1. A secondary school record transcript including scores from SAT tests or ACT tests.

2. A student description summary with a statement by the guidance counselor.

3. Two letters of reference from persons who are not relatives. These letters must be mailed directly to the committee. (See address of chairperson below.) It is suggested that these letters be from professionals such as teachers, clergymen, etc.

4. A brief essay describing past activities and future goals.

5. A copy of current courses and grades.

SWDGA award winners will be expected to contribute toward their education from sources listed on the application. They will also be expected to maintain a satisfactory scholastic record and to conduct themselves as responsible citizens.

An annual award of $1,250 will be given to the winner, payable by semester ($625), not to exceed four years, as long as the winner remains in good standing and financial need exists. A reevaluation of the recipient’s qualifications will be made annually.
